The Serengeti National Park simply offers the finest wildlifeviewing anywhere in Africa. Over 16,000 square kilometres of pristine wilderness play host to the Great Migration and boast thehighest density of large predators, including lions, leopards andcheetahs, in the world. Grass plains, woodlands, hills and riversabound. The variety and abundance of wildlife here is unmatchedanywhere else in Africa. The Serengeti ecosystem supports notonly the largest herds of migrating ungulates but also the highestconcentrations of large carnivores in the world. At a quick glance, the numbers are staggering. Estimates put the wildebeest atabout 1.7 million, zebras at 250,000 and Thomson’s gazelles atabout 440,000. Hyenas are the most numerous of the largecarnivores at about 9,000, lions at 2,800, leopards at 1,000 and cheetahs at about 500. The ecosystem supports an incrediblediversity of large mammals including elephant, hippo, rhino, giraffe, buffalo, warthog, 19 species of antelope, 3 species ofprimates and several species of lesser known carnivores including serval, jackal, bateared fox, honey badger (ratel), genetand mongoose plus 500 species of birds!
The goal for these days is to explore the Central Serengetiincluding the famous Seronera Valley where we will track the herds of wildebeest and Zebras on their annual migration.Located in the Central Serengeti your accommodation is ideally situated to offer superlative access to the ‘Big 5’ with sweepingviews overlooking endless plains and river confluences. CentralSerengeti, famous known as Seronera area is a transitional zone, where the Serengeti plains end, and the woodlands begin, givingrise to a multitude of species that co-exist from both habitats.Because the rivers that run through the Seronera Valley areperennial, most of the animals here are full-time residents, making it one of the best areas for game viewing year-round.Some of the species you'll likely see exploring the SeroneraValley include lion, leopard, cheetah, hyena, jackal, bat-eared fox, mongoose, elephant, giraffe, impala, waterbuck, hippo, Nile crocodile, topi, hartbeest, redbuck, bushbuck, buffalo, baboonand ververt monkeys. The acacia and sausage trees lining therivers are some of the best places for spotting leopards in theCentral Serengeti. The Seronera is also home to a significant leopard population and this is your second-best chance of seeingmany leopards on safari.
We`ll search for the big cats - lions, leopard and cheetah and thesmall ones too. According to the Serengeti Lion Research Project,Central Serengeti home to over twelve lion prides that live withina one-hour game drive radius of the Seronera River Valley. Ourfavourites here are the Sametu Kopjes and Gol Kopjes, whereyour expert guides will share their intimate knowledge of theinteresting lives of lion prides covered in the famous story of Quammen (profiled in the National Geographic). We’ll pass byMoru Kopjes where Rhinos have been introduced; both locationsoffer exclusive game drives as an alternative from overcrowdedcentral Serengeti.

DA Y 5 - NG O R O N G O R O C R A T E R TO U R
Today you will leave the plains of the Serengeti behind and headtowards the Ngorongoro Highlands where you tour inside thefamous Ngorongoro Crater.
When the road reaches the Crater rim there is a splendidviewpoint. From the rim you can look down some 500 meters to the crater floor. Spread out below you is all the features that makethe crater a microcosm of the Serengeti: open grassland, streams, swamps, lakes, forests, hills and steep slopes. Theseare the habitats that allow so many animals to live together insuch a small area. Take some time to study the Crater floor with apair of binoculars. You can usually see buffalo, hippo andelephant near the swamps and sometimes rhino on the plains. The edge or top of the Crater’s rim is unbroken, though indentedby watercourses. Ngorongoro Crater is really a caldera, thesunken or collapsed cone of a volcano. It is the largest inactiveand unbroken caldera in the world. Before Ngorongoro collapsedabout 2.5 million years ago, it may have rivaled Mount Kilimanjaroin size.
The Ngorongoro Crater is a UNESCO world heritage site, theworld's largest intact volcanic caldera and is commonly referred toas the 8th wonder of the world. The 2,000 feet high walls of theapproximately 10 mile wide crater create a natural Amphitheatrefor the densest populations of large animals anywhere. The richsoils and abundant, year-round water provide an ideal habitat for a variety of approximately 22,000 large animals. Herbivores that you will likely encounter include elephant bulls, black rhino, hippo, buffalo, eland, zebra, wildebeest, hartebeest, waterbuck, warthog, Grant's gazelle and Thomson's gazelle. Giraffe, impala and topiare strangely absent from the Crater floor, though they arecommon in the nearby Serengeti. Primates include baboons andvervet monkeys. Carnivores that you will likely encounter includelion, cheetah, hyena and jackal. Leopards, servals, bat earedfoxes and ratels are also resident within the Crater but are muchmore elusive.
The Ngorongoro Crater is the only spot in Africa where one cansee all three species of jackals including the black- backed jackal, golden jackal and side-striped jackal. Jackal pairs mate for lifeand are capable hunters taking a variety of prey items includinginsects, birds, rodents and gazelle fawns though they are alsoopportunistic scavengers.
Your driver guide will pack a picnic lunch to be enjoyed in thecrater at Ngoitokitok Springs where you can stretch your safarilegs, listen to the grunts of the local hippos and admire theprofusion of bird life.
In the afternoon ascent the Crater wall again and drive to your accommodation outside of the conservation area and Drive back to Arusha for dinner and overnight.
